Bellevue Y Participates in Operation Christmas Child

October 17, 2018

It's Christmas time
There's no need to be afraid
At Christmas time
We let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty
We can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
At Christmas time

—“Do They Know It’s Christmas?” by Band Aid

Thirty-four years ago, Band Aid (comprised of world famous musicians such as Sting, Bono, and George Michael) released the song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” as a reminder of those less fortunate in other parts of the world. The song encouraged millions to pitch in during the holiday season in relief efforts for a drought-stricken Africa. But the words still ring true today and remind us to consider others at this time of year.

The YMCA of Middle Tennessee is working to “throw our arms around the world at Christmas time” and will again partner with Samaritan’s Purse to collect gift-filled shoeboxes for children worldwide as part of the annual outreach effort Operation Christmas Child . The Y will join in the local efforts of Operation Christmas Child to collect shoeboxes at twelve of its Middle Tennessee locations and has a goal of 2,500 shoeboxes. Anyone wishing to fill a shoebox for a child in need may pick up an empty box and list of recommended supplies at any participating YMCA in Middle Tennessee. Simply return it with your gifts by the November 16 deadline.

Follow these easy steps to participate:

  • Start with an average-sized cardboard or plastic shoebox (or pick a box up at a participating YMCA location). If you want to wrap it, cover the box and lid separately.
  • Decide whether you will pack a box for a girl or a boy and the age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14.
  • Select a quality “wow” toy such as a doll, soccer ball with pump, or stuffed animal. Then add other fun toys, hygiene items, and school supplies. Samaritan's Purse also has suggestions on what and what not to include in your shoebox.
  • Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift. You can also include a personal note and photo.
  • Take your shoebox gift to the Y by November 16.
  • If you choose, you can donate $7 online at Follow Your Box and receive a tracking label to discover the destination of your shoebox gift.

Anyone can pack a shoebox. Individuals, families, churches and groups fill empty shoeboxes with school supplies, hygiene items and fun toys, such as dolls or soccer balls. Your shoebox could reach a child in need in places like Peru, the Philippines, Rwanda, Ukraine or the Middle East; your shoebox may be the first Christmas gift some of these children have ever received.

“With YMCAs in more than 120 countries, our organization’s mission and impact are felt across the globe, and our support of Operation Christmas Child is a great way to partner with another nonprofit to connect our members and community with ‘neighbors’ we may never meet, but for whom the contents of a small shoebox can mean so much,” said YMCA Chaplain Vona Wilson.

Come to our packing party!

The Bellevue Y will be hosting a party on Sunday, November 11 from 2:00 - 6:00 pm. All ages are welcome to help us pack boxes for hundreds of children in need. Treats and snacks will be provided.

In 1984, Band Aid posed the question: “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” The YMCA of Middle Tennessee aims to answer that question with a resounding yes.

All YMCA of Middle Tennessee locations except for Clarksville, Downtown, and Margaret Maddox are participating in shoebox collection.
