Member Spotlight: Nicole

March 25, 2019

Nicole is a busy mom of two teenagers who enjoys the Bellevue Y for its friendly staff, variety of group fitness classes and indoor pool.

In a month, Nicole will complete her first half marathon, thanks in large part to friends she met training here.

“I was lost”

Nicole suffered a serious neck injury that required surgery and put limitations on her physical activity. For nearly a decade, Nicole watched from afar as her friends trained to run. “For nine years I’ve been told I wouldn’t be able to run long distances. Now, there are no limits. I was determined to do a half (marathon),” she said. But getting started was easier said than done. “Every year I watch all my friends, and I never got to do it. I felt lost trying to figure out how to train for (a half marathon) by myself.”

A short conversation with Erin, the Bellevue Y’s wellness director, led Nicole to a group of members who meet to run on Saturday mornings with trainer Stephanie Knight. Nicole signed up and started getting the group emails.

She was hesitant to meet up with the group at first. “I thought, 'I’m slow, and I know they are going be faster than me, and I’m going to feel like I can’t do it.' So I would just follow along from afar,” she said. Then about six weeks ago, Nicole made the leap and decided to meet up with them.

She was pleasantly surprised. “It was so much fun. I got to learn so much about the people I was running with. We talked the whole time.”

Making strides

After a group run that started in Green Hills and went through downtown Nashville, Nicole recalls what went through her head. “I’m standing downtown because I physically ran here. I didn’t get here by car! I felt like I could keep up and wouldn’t be a snail. That was the furthest I had ever run in my life. It’s exciting every time.”

Nicole credits the run club and the Bellevue Y with keeping her on track – and making her feel at home. “It’s like a family. I never come in and don’t see someone that I know. I always feel welcome.”

In April, Nicole will join thousands of runners, many of them Y members, for her first half marathon at St. Jude Rock ‘n’ Roll Nashville. She also has a few other races in mind, including the YMCA’s 20th Annual Andrews Cadillac 5K and 10K on July 4.

When she isn’t running, Nicole also takes BODYPUMP, yoga and cycling. Stop by and say hello after class. Good luck, Nicole!
