My Y Story: Shannon

April 11, 2019

We asked our members and volunteers to share their stories and how the Y has impacted them. Below is Shannon's story:

Shannon joined the Bellevue YMCA in February 2017 after moving to Nashville with her family from Chicago. She started volunteering at the Y to make friends in her new town. She’s worked alongside our staff for two years serving members and our community through three of our programs.

“The Bellevue Y is like a second home and gives me a place to use my abilities and interests to help others. I like helping with the Hurricanes Swim Team, Full Circle and Summer Camp,” Shannon said.

Full Circle provides social and recreational opportunities to help children ages 3-21 with varying abilities grow in spirit, mind and body. Activities include team sports, swim lessons, dance and fellowship. “Working with the kids in Full Circle is great because they are fun to be around.” Shannon especially loves accompanying the kids on trips.“The Friday field trips we take with camp are a highlight of my week.”

Shannon has made a lot of friends through volunteering, but has also picked up some skills along the way. “I have learned better water safety and CPR skills.I have made friendships and developed better social skills. The staff members have been great friends and mentors to me since I started at the Y.”
