My Y Story: Meaghan

May 16, 2019

We asked our members and volunteers to share their stories and how the Y has impacted them. Below is Meaghan's story:

You can usually find me early mornings on the treadmill or elliptical. I tend to be a total cardio queen. I think it’s a mostly so I can keep up with my four children. They are all boys ages 4 to 20.

Overweight and ashamed

I didn’t really catch onto a healthy lifestyle until I reached my early 30s. I was extremely overweight and didn’t know how much exercise would help me.

I started walking one lap a day around a track. That was an obstacle for me. At one point I was too ashamed of how I looked to go to the YMCA. With swollen ankles after one lap, I kept up. I kept upping my exercise and seeing results. The weight started to fall off. I was on a strict diet and never missed my daily exercise. I wasn’t giving up!

After dropping close to 100 pounds I joined the YMCA. It was nerve-wracking.

Mind, Body, Spirit

As I walked in to the Bellevue Y, the first thing to catch my eye was a poster that read "mind, body and spirit." I didn’t understand its full meaning, but I liked it. I took a picture of it. I love the welcoming feeling I received every time I walked through those doors. I realized: You don’t have to have the perfect body to be here, but rather the mind and spirit to improve.

It all came together for me little by little. At first, I was overwhelmed on my own. I hid in the back room with my headphones on.

Building a Y Family

The morning crew started to reach out to me. I was amazed by the friendly welcome. I even moved in the big room so I could have those conversations that I now look so forward to. I don’t even get my headphones out of my purse anymore.

Most mornings are filled with laughter and silly jokes that make my workout not even feel like one. But when more serious moments and illness struck, I found that my Y family had those same strong roots that resembled those of my own family. Their love and support mean more to me than I could ever express.

My Y family continues to check in on me and do everything possible to make me smile. The morning crew makes my days.

Giving Back

By reaching out to fellow members I have been able to give back. In 2018, I volunteered at the annual Flippin’ For A Cause. I met so many new people and saw so many different faces. I met new friends. We laughed, we danced, but most importantly we supported the cause.

I have found the true meaning of mind, body and spirit. It flourishes every day that I have my Y crew by my side.

Today I walk in the Bellevue YMCA doors with a smile. Behind those doors you will find the most amazing people who have the warmest of hearts. This is my Y and I am committed to making it the best experience for others.
