Our Y is for Everyone

March 4, 2019

Last week, Franklin Y staff wore black in observance of the 2nd Annual Y-USA WE WEAR BLACK campaign, an initiative that gives Y employees the opportunity to visibly stand united in solidarity with all marginalized groups in their communities.

For Franklin Y staff, wearing black signifies their larger commitment as employees to uphold the mission of the Y as a charitable fellowship united for the purpose of helping people grow in spirit, mind and body.

Y-USA Welcoming Week

Franklin Y staff and members alike had a chance to visibly express their support of the Y’s commitment to inclusion by participating in 2018 Y-USA Welcoming Week last September.

“Member participation during Welcoming Week was an incredible display of their support to our Y’s commitment to inclusion,” said Franklin YMCA Executive Director Drew Freeman. During Welcoming Week, Y staff and members celebrated Franklin’s diversity and pledged to uphold the Y’s commitment to welcoming all by placing their names on “I AM A WELCOMER” cards for display around the center.

Open Doors

The most consistent display of solidarity by staff and members to welcoming all occurs each year during the Annual Giving Campaign, when members and staff make personal donations in support of the Franklin Y Open Doors Program.

The YMCA Open Doors program ensures that all residents within the Franklin community have access to the Franklin Y, regardless of their ability to pay.

In 2018, 330 staff and members collectively gave $117,000 in donations to ensure that 737 children, families, adults and seniors in need had access to vital Y programs and activities. This includes child care, active older adult events, swim lessons, youth sports and small groups (e.g. Journey to Freedom, Financial Peace University).

“It’s intentional that our Y’s mission and commitment to inclusion is directly tied to our culture of philanthropy and our organization’s case for support,” said Development Coordinator Brook Johnson. “Need does not discriminate, and neither do we. When donors give to the Y, they are giving back to people, regardless of who they are, and for me, this is the mission of the Y in action!”
