Try Water Cardio

June 20, 2019
These aren't your traditional water aerobics.

H2O cardio is quickly becoming a crowd favorite at the Y. While water cardio group exercise classes are popular with seniors dealing with arthritic or joint pain, they're also great for anyone looking for a low-impact workout, recovering from an injury, or just seeking something new.

Water cardio classes can help you burn between 200-400 calories (depending on which you try!) and use the water's natural resistance to build muscle and strength. Instructors often teach on the pool deck to music, so come ready to let loose!

Expert advice

Jan Taylor, an H2O cardio instructor at the Franklin Family YMCA loves the freedom of water classes.

"Everyone is equal in the water classes. You can move at your own pace, and if you are restricted with land classes, you can excel in the water."

Water cardio works for all fitness levels. "Classes are easy on the joints, good strength and cardio workouts, and you make new friends," Jan said. "If you are recovering from or want to prevent injuries, the water classes can provide a fun, safe and effective part of your wellness plan."

Instructors are there to help

Instructors typically brief new participants on a few things they should know:

  • The water depth should hit mid-upper arm to armpit.
  • If you can't do a particular move, don't do it. You can make something else up—just keep moving.
  • Breathe, smile, and bring some water.
  • Ask for help if you don't know how to perform a move.
  • Have fun!
