Brook Shares Her Inspiration

July 18, 2019

Our Development Director Brook Johnson is one of the Franklin Y’s most recognizable faces. She knows your name, even if you don’t know hers. And we don’t think we’ve ever seen her in a bad mood. Throughout the year, Brook hears our members' stories. It's time to hear hers!

While Brook is a rockstar in the eyes of the staff and members here, she admits she wasn’t always confident.  Before joining our Y, Brook was struggling after a job loss and was riddled with self doubt.

Brook opened up about this difficult time. “The central focus of the YMCA’s mission is to help people ‘grow in spirit, mind and body,’ and I was hurting in all three areas when I came to work (here.) I was not sure if my abilities would be enough to lead a task as large our fundraising efforts at the Y.”

But Brook found inspiration during her first fundraising campaign when she met Marcus Nelson. Marcus is a single father of three, who was struggling and sought help from the Y. “Marcus shared with me how impactful the Franklin YMCA has been on the well-being of his family (during hardship), and he credited (the Y) for helping him become a stronger man for his family.”

Marcus’ story left an impression on Brook. “His joy and gratitude in return gave me such peace, and where there is peace, I believe God dwells. I made a decision that day that I would lay down my own fears and insecurities and trust God in faith to bless and provide the provisions needed to serve our children and families in need in our community.”

Brook says her prayers were answered. “God is faithful, and from that day until this, He has honored my prayers and sent hundreds of donors and dozens of volunteers to fund raise for our ministry and cause. It brings me so much joy to walk into the Franklin YMCA every day and serve the ministry by fundraising for others in need.”

She’s taken it a step further and made a personal commitment to sponsor a family in need with a membership to our Y. “I love our Y, and I love what I do! Working for the Franklin YMCA is the greatest blessing that I could ask for in my career!”

Every Friday we bring you stories, numbers and nuggets highlighting our generous community. Have something to share for our blog and social media? Email Brook at bjohnson@ymcamidtn.org
