Member Spotlight: Charles Lott

December 21, 2018

"You can do anything you want to do, except be a baseball player which you weren't planning to do anyway." This is what a doctor told Charles Lott when asked what he would be able to do wearing a new prosthesis which replaced the leg amputated as result of an auto accident in 1957 when he was age 21 and a senior in college.

Recent advances in prosthetic technology now make it possible for amputees to run, but that was not the case 60 years ago. He discovered that when running is not an option, swimming is one of the best means of aerobic exercise.

Ten years ago, he raised the bar for himself when he decided to attempt swimming 100 miles in one year. Each year, he continued to raise his personal goal, peaking in 2016 by swimming 282 miles. Although he continues to swim several days a week at the Sumner County Family YMCA, he is no longer raising his goal.

This year, Charles decided to try and swim his age in laps.  And on December 11, he swam 82 laps.

Charles says, “Swimming became a way for me to remain physically active and healthy into my senior years. During the past 61 years, I have been able to swim in indoor and outdoor pools in numerous cities, but none of them are equal to the Sumner County Y, where we have facilities that serve the needs of senior citizens and persons with physical restrictions. Our YMCA has a dedicated dressing room for special needs members, motorized lifts to assist mobility limited individuals in getting in and out of the pool, and a staff that continues to look for ways to improve facilities that I would rate as already state-of-the-art.

“The best part of coming to our Y is the friendly, helpful staff that greets you with a smile, calls you by name, and makes you feel like a member of the family. When I finished the 82nd lap on my birthday, in addition to my wife most of the YMCA staff were at the end of the pool, cheering, holding a sign and singing "Happy Birthday." Birthday celebrations don't get any better than this!”

Charles Lott is an inspiration to us all at the Sumner County Family YMCA.
