2008 Lifeguard Certification Classes
YMCA Life guarding courses provide the basic skills and knowledge lifeguards need in pool, lake, river, surf and water park environments. The comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to guard by anticipating and preventing problems before they occur and by taking action to help those in danger if necessary. Participants that need Re-certification and Crossover from American Red Cross to YMCA Life guarding can be certified through these classes as well.
Course Pre-requisites
- Must be at least 16 years of age. Parental consent is required for those under 18.
- Must be able to pass the following swim test on the first day of class:
- Perform a long, shallow front dive
- Swim 500 meters including 100 meters of each: sidestroke, front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke kick with one arm forward, and inverted breaststroke kick with arms on the stomach
- Tread water for two minutes using legs only (head above water)
- Surface dive head first and feet first in 8-10 feet of water and swim under water for 15 feet

Group Swim Lessons
YMCA Group Swim lessons are offered year round. For accelerated learning - the classes are divided into four age groups: PARENT/CHILD (ages 6 months - 3 years), PRESCHOOLERS (ages 3-5), YOUTH (ages 6-12) and TEEN/ADULT (ages 13 and up). Within each age group, participants are placed into skill levels according to their swimming ability.

Private Swim Lessons
One-on-one private lessons are available for any age and any ability level. Private Lessons are 30 minutes in length and are personalized to fit each individual's needs and goals. Register at the member services desk. The Swim Lesson Coordinator will contact you to set an appointment once payment has been received.

Maryland Farms YMCA is excited to announce its partnership with Nashville Aquatic Club. This is a terrific opportunity for your children to develop their swimming skills while enjoying the fun of competitive swimming year round!
Professional NAC coaches lead the Beginner and Intermediate groups. Focus is on stroke development, efficiency and technique. We compete monthly in the YMCA of Middle Tennessee Swim League.
Practice Groups:
Beginner
Typically ages 5-9
Practice: Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday from 5:15-6:00 PM
Swimmers who are newer to competitive swimming; swimmers must be able to swim unassisted for at least 25 meters and should be comfortable with Freestyle and Backstroke.
Intermediate
Typically age 7-10
Practice: Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday from 4:15-5:15 PM
Swimmers who have previously been a member of a competitive team; swimmers should have a good sense of each of the four competitive strokes.
Advanced
Typically 11-18
Practices: Tuesday/Thursday from 6:00-7:00 PM
Swimmers who have previously been a member of a competitive swim team;
swimmers should have a good sense of each of the four competitive strokes.

Music City Masters
Music City Masters is a year-round program for adult swimmers. Written workouts are provided daily, with deck coaching three days a week. Music City Masters team travels to sanctioned meets and attends fun meets at Maryland Farms YMCA as well as other facilities in the Nashville area. MCM is an excellent motivational tool for the adult lap swimmer who wants to continue or begin experiencing competition or simply achieve that personal best.

Basic First Aid Certification
This class is designed to give individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for injuries and sudden illness until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.
