Wellness

The YMCA movement and its commitment to health and wellness is so strong, it even created the sports of basketball and volleyball, as well as YMCA methods for swim instruction that have become the standard in teaching people how to swim. However, fitness is just one part of a larger whole, not a separate activity of the YMCA's other programs and services. The YMCA has never focused on the body alone, because for over a century the Y has recognized that a person achieves total health when his/her spirit, mind and body are balanced.

Massage Therapy
Massage therapy is the manipulation of soft tissues of the body with intentions of positively affecting the health and well-being of the client. Massage has been proven to reduce stress, release muscular tension, increase circulation, decrease recovery time after injury or physical activity, and fulfill the need for the human touch. Massage techniques available include Swedish, neuromuscular therapy, sports, prenatal, infant, and chair. Please contact Beverly Hood or Scott Vandiver in advance to make your appointment.

Personal Training
Personal training can make a difference in the success of your program. Our trainers can work with you regularly or on a consulting basis to help design a workout that is uniquely yours. Trainers encourage you to exercise and reach your goals. Trainers are YMCA, CPR, and ACE/AFAA or ACSM certified. Trainers must be employed by the YMCA. Members may not provide their own trainers.

Sessions are $50 per hour or $500 for 10 sessions.

Fitness Evaluation
Fitness evaluations are FREE. A fitness evaluation measures overall physical fitness by determining:

· Resting heart rate and resting blood pressure
· Percentage of body fat using calipers to measure skinfold thickness
· Cardiovascular endurance using a three-minute step test
· Upper body strength determined by performing a bench press test
· Abdominal strength by performing a one-minute sit-up test
· Flexibility using a sit and reach test

A fitness evaluation determines your current fitness level and serves as a guide for setting fitness goals. Evaluations are conducted by fitness specialists and take one hour. Please wear workout clothes and shoes. Please do not exercise or consume any caffeine two hours before this evaluation.

Youth Strength Training
All youth and teens between ages 10 and 14 must complete The Youth Strength Training Certification before exercising in the wellness center. Contact Drew Massey for more information on class times.

Session Times:
Youth Strength Training classes will be offered monthly.

Fee: $35 for members. Must pay before class starts.

Equipment Orientations
Equipment orientations are for all YMCA members and are FREE. An equipment orientation gives the member the opportunity to become more knowledgeable and comfortable with the fitness equipment in both the machine and free weight areas. A trained YMCA fitness staff member will show you the proper techniques on using the Nautilus strength training machines and cardiovascular equipment. We suggest that the equipment orientation is broken down into three appointments, but they can be structured to meet the needs of the member. Each orientation will take approximately one hour to complete. Please wear workout clothes and shoes.

Workout Consultations
Workout consultations are encouraged for all members who would like to make a change in their current workout program. A trained wellness staff member will help update your workout so that it meets your needs and challenges your current fitness level. Workout consultations are free and will take approximately 1 hour depending on your goals. Workout consultation appointments are made at the Welcome Center.
