Moolah, dough, simoleons—whatever you choose to call it, money can have a significant impact on your overall health and wellbeing. Stress from debt, emergency expenditures, or a bad budget often affects our relationships, jobs, bodies, and more.
The Y is committed to helping our community achieve financial health by offering Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (FPU).
Just like exercise buddies support you in your fitness goals, having people alongside you on this journey can help you reach your financial goals. Our facilitators guide each group through the nine-week course as their lives change for the better.
Finding freedom from debt
One of these powerful success stories comes from Sarah Houston and her husband, Monty. While participating in FPU at the Clarksville Y, they committed to grow financially healthy and saw tremendous progress.
“FPU literally changed our lives,” Sarah said. “We started our journey as two college kids scraping by on close to minimum wage, and managed to become completely debt free in just three years. We were $40k in debt. Now we own our own home!”
Sarah says their most beneficial takeaway was learning it’s not about how much money you make, it’s about what you do with it. Now, she and Monty are less stressed about emergency bills that come throughout the year because they are better prepared.
“We are able to save money for things we want and adjust the budget for life’s changes,” she said. “We most recently adjusted our budget to accommodate our son, who is now nine months old.”
Sarah often encourages others to take FPU. She understands that it can feel overwhelming for some people to sort out what seems like a financial “mess,” but she says that there’s no better time to start than right now.
“You may be afraid to really take a deep look into your finances, but really diving in is the best way to understand where you are and what your goals will be,” she said.
