Healthy Habits Help Fight Breast Cancer

Before the end of 2009 nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. But nearly 40 percent of those cases -- or around 70,000 -- could have been prevented if women maintained a healthy weight, drank less alcohol, exercised more and engaged in other healthy lifestyle habits, according to a new medical study.
5 Emotional Barriers to Better Health

Do you frequently start a workout routine only to stop? Do you snack when you are bored or upset? Have you planned exercise into your schedule only to see it get crowded out again and again by work or home responsibilities? Do you feel chronically dissatisfied with your weight or overall appearance?

Unfortunately, many of us can answer "yes" to one or more of these questions. When this is the case, it could be a sign of deeper emotional barriers that are blocking your path to a healthier lifestyle.

Every day at the Y, members like you inspire us with the remarkable things you are doing to grow stronger in spirit, mind and body-and we want the rest of the world to know about it!

The YMCA of Middle Tennessee is currently looking for members willing to share their YMCA success stories.

5 Better Ways to Measure Your Fitness Progress

Unless you're a contestant on The Biggest Loser, body weight is one of the least important ways for you to judge how you're progressing with your workouts. We asked Harriet Shirley, wellness director at the Green Hills Family YMCA, to give us five better ways to track the success of your health or fitness plan.

Body Composition

Body composition is simply a measurement of how a person's overall body mass is composed -- fat versus the other stuff we're carrying around (lean muscle, bones, organs, etc.)

Banding Together for Water Safety

All around YMCA of Middle Tennessee pools this summer, boys and girls are sporting colorful new wrist bands. Signs of a bold new fashion statement? Perhaps. What the bands really signify is the YMCA of Middle Tennessee's ongoing commitment to the safety of the thousands of children and other swimmers who enjoy our pools each year.
How Healthy Food Options Can Lead to Unhealthy Choices

With restaurants adding more nutritious options to their menus, you might think it would be easier than ever to stick to a healthy eating plan. In fact, that new salad may actually be making it harder to stick to your diet when you visit your favorite fast food chain.

That's the provocative conclusion recently reached by researchers at Duke University. Through a series of experiments, the scientists found that having one healthy option can ironically make you more likely to pick out the worst food possible for you.

Shake Up Your Routine With YMCA Boot Camps

If you're bored with your workouts or are just looking for a way to jumpstart your routine, YMCA boot camp classes may be just what you need.

While they may not be for everybody, boot camps are quickly gaining popularity throughout the country based on their promise of offering noticeable results in exchange for a few weeks of hard work. Boot camps at the Y give you the added bonus of working with a nationally certified YMCA personal trainer at a fraction of the cost of a one-on-one personal training session.
Sleep Your Way to a Better Workout

If you felt a little sluggish during your last cardio workout, the reason why may lie in how much shuteye you had the night before.

Just last month, a group of researchers at Stanford University presented findings of a study that found getting extra sleep can be a key factor in improving athletic performance (not to mention your overall alertness and mood).

YMCA Honors Its Volunteers of the Year

In 2008, nearly 6,000 YMCA volunteers across Middle
Tennessee and southern Kentucky
helped enrich the lives of thousands of men, women and children in our
community.

Some used their talents to help further the work of YMCA
outreach programs. Others devoted their time to helping those in need by leading a Bible study or coaching a youth sports team. Still others played vital roles in raising money to help keep the Y available to all through its Open Doors financial assistance program.

YMCA Launches Healthy Habits Initiative

In this age of fast food, long commutes and short supplies of free time, starting and maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle can be a real challenge. The one place it shouldn't be a struggle is at your local Y.

That's the motivation behind the YMCA of Middle Tennessee's new Healthy Habits initiative. Starting this month, the Y will begin the process of transforming its wellness centers, program sites and other locations into places where living healthy can become a lifelong habit.

Spring Clean Your Exercise Routine

Your workout routine can be a lot like the closets in your home: a little spring cleaning can do it a lot of good.

According to health and wellness experts, our bodies naturally adapt to a particular workout routine after about six to eight weeks. The all-too-common result: we hit the dreaded "plateau," or point when we see diminishing returns to exercises that once worked wonders.

So before it gathers too much dust, here are a few simple ideas to shake up your exercise plan and give it that nice spring clean feeling:
