Swim Lessons
Since the early 1900s, the YMCA has been a pioneer in aquatics safety & instruction. In 1907, the first group swim lessons were taught at the Detroit YMCA. Since then, the YMCA movement across the United States has led the industry in providing excellence in swim instruction. At the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, every swim lesson participant has the opportunity to learn and succeed.
The Sumner County Family YMCA swim programs follow the National YMCA Guidelines for swim lessons. At each level, there are skills taught from each of five components: personal growth, personal safety, stroke development, water sports and games and rescue. The preschool, youth, and adult classes meet for 45 minutes and the parent/child classes meet for 30 minutes. Please check the Swim Lesson Schedule for dates and times.
Swim Lesson Policies:
- Three participants must sign-up for the class to continue as scheduled. If only two participants register for the class, then the class will meet three times for 30 minutes instead of the four 45-minute lessons. If only one participant registers for the class, the class will be canceled.
- In the event of poor weather or pool problems, the instructor will reschedule classes for a later date.
- Swim lessons can only be made up for the following circumstances: family death or emergency, YMCA scheduling conflict or pool closure due to thunder and lightning.
- When Sumner County schools are closed due to weather, some aquatic programs may be cancelled and rescheduled at a later date set by the aquatics director.
- If you are registered for a private lesson, make-ups will be offered only if the aquatic department receives a 24-hour advance notice.
- Registration for each session ends the Friday prior to the first day of class.
