Positive Beginnings
Positive Beginnings is dedicated to helping youth involved in Davidson County's juvenile court system avoid the mistakes of the past. The program is a joint effort of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, Metro Police, National Guard and Metro Juvenile Court. Each year, 20 male and 20 female adolescents between the ages of 13 to 17 are selected from a pool of potential participants referred to the program from the Juvenile Court Probation Office. Those selected then undergo a series of counseling, Bible study sessions, workshops, tutoring and other training, starting with Life Skills Camp, an intensive three-week "boot camp" experience at Camp Easter Seals in Mt. Juliet. The program also reaches out with counseling and other services to the participants' parents and family members.
Upon graduation from camp, participants continue with a 10-month aftercare program that includes further counseling and training as well as community service projects, social events and recreation opportunities. The goal is to help participants build a better future for themselves and in the process reduce juvenile crime recidivism rates in the Nashville area.
