SMARTKids provides children in East Nashville with the motivation and guidance they need to succeed in school, discover their gifts and develop other critical skills needed in today's fast-changing world.
SMARTKids currently serves approximately 40 youth who attend one of five middle or high schools in East Nashville. Each weekday after school, caring adults provide these youth with academic assistance and character development training. They also enjoy activities such as dancing, playing games and going on special outings. Students' creative skills are further nurtured through the program's Arts Alive and Hip Kids initiatives.
One young lady's experience is an example of how SMARTKids helps children live up to their fullest God-given potential. She spent several years in the SMARTKids program, and served as a leader and choreographer of the program's dance team. Along the way, she blossomed into a great student with a 3.8 grade-point average that ranked her in the top 10 percent of her class. Today, she is enrolled at Austin Peay State University, where she is pursuing a medical degree and active in several clubs.
This student would be the first to tell you her goals would not have been possible without the help of SMARTKids. SMARTKids believes similar big dreams rest in the heart and mind of every young child. It is SMARTKids' mission to see them develop the necessary vision, skills and determination to make them come true.
