For many adults, there are certain people who made a special impact on our lives during childhood. For some, it might be an attentive teacher or the motivational coach for a Little League team. For young Collin, age 6, it was the Day Camp counselors at the YMCA. They made such a lasting impression, in fact, that Collin hopes to carry on the counselor legacy with future YMCA Day Campers.
According to Collin’s mother, Genny, she wanted to send Collin to YMCA Day Camp because of the safe, fun environment she had experienced with other events held at the Y—“exceptional experiences,” she says.
With themed camp weeks, YMCA Day Campers get to experience a wide variety of activities and opportunities, from wacky water games to special guests to mind-boggling science experiments. Some campers find that reptile visits—often part of Outdoor Explorers week—is their favorite part of camp. Other campers love playing around with arts and crafts. Collin, however, shared with his mom that his favorite part of camp is “spending time with new friends, learning new games and activities, and meeting such wonderful camp counselors who truly care for him.” Plus, the water slide at the pool, of course, which he enjoyed on a daily basis.
Now that Collin has experienced caring and passionate counselors at YMCA Day Camp, he wants his first job to be a camp counselor at the Y. “He wants to be able to teach kids new activities like the camp counselors have done for him,” Genny says. “The camp counselors have had the biggest impact on him this summer, and he wants to be able to make that same impact for other kids.”
